The final day of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) saw the signing of the Final Acts <\/strong>by 157 Member States.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The last plenary session proceeded with the closing ceremony, which began with Romania\u2019s National Chamber Choir Madrigal\u2013Marin Constantin <\/strong>performing a reprise of the official PP-22 hymn, \u2018Connect and Unite.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Next,  Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciuc\u0103,<\/strong> addressed PP-22 delegates via video message.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

\u201cDigital transformation and telecommunication development are anchors of the economy of the future,\u201d he said, expressing gratitude to delegates from across the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao<\/strong>, whose tenure ends this year, delivered his final Plenipotentiary address.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

\u201cServing as TSB Director, Deputy Secretary-General, and Secretary-General was the pride and honour of my life,\u201d he said in his farewell speech, reflecting on his storied 36-year career. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

\u201cOver three decades, I witnessed first-hand how ICT innovations have changed the world \u2013 and how important ITU has been in advancing this digital transformation,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Zhao called on delegates to advocate for an ITU that is both a technical and a development agency, and to spread this message inside and outside the ITU family. \u201cLike in all families, we have stood together in good and hard times,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cThe future of ITU is in very capable hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Outgoing ITU Deputy Secretary-General Malcolm Johnson<\/strong>, whose tenure also ends this year, addressed the Plenipotentiary Conference for the last time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s 40 years this year since I first participated in ITU,\u201d said Johnson during his farewell speech, \u201cfirstly as a delegate, as Director of TSB, and finally as DSG.\u201d He expressed hopes for the organization\u2019s future, bolstered by \u201cITU\u2019s unique tradition of reaching decisions by consensus.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Citing the importance of collaboration, cooperation, and coordination, Johnson added: <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

\u201cI look forward to a new era for an invigorated ITU that will face the challenges ahead.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

Also concluding his tenure in 2022, outgoing Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) Director Dr. Chaesub Lee<\/strong>, addressed the closing plenary:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

\u201cI am a lucky engineer, having had so many opportunities to contribute to the development of global networks \u2013 the essential infrastructure of today\u2019s society,\u201d he said, reflecting on his 35 years at ITU, including 8 as an elected official. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\u201cMy responsibility is ending, but my journey within the ICT community will not stop,\u201d Lee added, noting how his farewell speech was delivered on World Standards Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

ITU Medals and Certificates of Recognition were presented to the salient elected officials for their service and contributions to the development of global telecommunications.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\u201cHistoric achievements for the Union and its Member States gives us reason to be proud for the work we put in,\u201d said PP-22 Chair Sabin S\u0103rma\u0219<\/strong> in his closing remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\u201cTogether, we made this world a bit better. It\u2019s up to each of us to continue what we started here in Bucharest.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
